Leisure time

Erlangen is known worldwide as a medical city, Siemens city, and University city. Although as Nürnberg's neighbor it seems quite small despite a population of 100,000, Erlangen is at the cutting edge of technology and science. The Friedrich-Alexander-University attracts professors from around the world and makes Erlangen a classic college town. A visit to Erlangen is anything but boring due to things like cultural events such as the Comic Salon, the spring festival "Bergkirchweih", idyllic cafes, the beautiful castle garden with its botanical garden, and last but not least the lively night life.
Erlangen offers many destinations for excursions such as the franconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz), many sights in town, and a number of leisure time activities for the active vacationer. The areas of the Frankenhöhe, Steigerwald, or the Franconian Seenland are all within a radius of 80 km. Children have great fun at the amusement parks Geiselwind (ca. 50 km away), Heroldsbach-Schloss Thurn (ca. 20 km), and the Playmobil Fun Park in Zirndorf (ca. 20 km). Should it rain, it is time for the indoor pools: the Fun and Adventure Pool Atlantis in Herzogenaurach, and the Königsbad in Forchheim.
Anyone who loves a bargain will find what they want at the outlet centers of Puma, Nike, Adidas, and S'Oliver, just 6 km from Erlangen in Herzogenaurach.
